Gumpaste Calla Lily Tutorial and Soft Method Tutorial

This tutorial is going to show you how to make a Calla Lily and also using the soft method which was new to me until a couple weeks ago when I took some classes at the Connecticut Cake Convention. So I hope this helps. I know that some of the video might be hard to see since I still am waiting for my camera to get fixed so I couldn't use my tripod and just had to try and angle it and balance it as best as I could. So when I do my Clemantis flower tutorial then I will show you the twiddling and the rest of the soft method again so you can get the best picture possible. Let me know if you have any questions.

Here are the tools that you need (from left to right):
A small ball of gumpaste, sugar glue, floral tape, wire for your flower center and one for the petal, and corn meal or cream of wheat that is colored yellow.

Calla Lily cutters. There are lots of styles and sizes out there depending on the size you want your flower to be. If you are going to make a spray it is nice to have a few different sizes.

A board or surface that you have coated with shortening, a foam tool (only if you want your petal bigger than the flower cutter you have) and a rolling pin.

A flower veiner (you can't do the soft method unless you have a double sided veiner) and a ball tool (only if you are going to make the petal larger than the cutter you want to cut it out with).

Petal dust or some kind of coloring (unless you want white Calla Lilies, but I still add a white petal dust to my white flowers), and styro foam to dry them on.

Ok, so this is how you make them.
Insert a wire into a small ball of fondant and twist and elongate it down the wire leaving the top slightly larger than the bottom.

You want to measure your center to your cutter. You want it to be about 1/2 to 2/3 of the cutter leaving a tiny big of wire at the bottom (so it is easier to wrap the petal around the center).

Dip it in the sugar glue. You don't want tons dripping everywhere and if there is then just gently wipe off the excess on a paper towel.

Roll or twist in Corn Meal or Cream of Wheat that you have colored yellow with powdered coloring. Set it in the styro foam to dry a little. Time to move on to the wire for the petal.

This video shows you how to get the wire ready to attach to the petal

This video shows how to cut out the petals and adhere the wire to the petal.

I tried adding the last video on how to color and assemble the flower and for some reason either it is too long or my computer too slow, it wont work (and I tried many times). So I made another post to show with pictures how to do it ( See finishing the Calla Lily). If you have questions let me know.
